XXL: "Nas has finally lost it. Yet, the cause for his mental breakdown is not illmatic, (the m.c.s 94 debut universally worshipped within hip hop folklore which has haunted him throughout his 10 year campaign). Its not Nas's dubious penchant for contradiction. Nor is it the punch drunk after effects of his TRIUMPHANT BATTLE with rap goliath JAY-Z. No, we give you exhibit A: STREETS DISCIPLE. Surely Nas's defiant and Bloated double album is proof that the emcee is crazy enough to take on the entire soundscan-obsessed rap scene.
Street disciple comes out a time when the dirty south swaggers in its own drunk with crunk dominance, and the poster boy platinum thuggery of 50 cents g-unit runs rampant. So intelligently artistic, Nas summons his trusty new co-pilot producer Salaam remi, AND CREATES A LP LIKE NOTHING ELSE ON THE RADIO, OR IN HIPHOP, for that matter. Rather then play the game of music industry politics, Nas opts to mine tha past. The LP's lead off "THIEFS THEME" Does just that as salaams James bond strings inspire sincere to script poverty-stricken poetry laced be Nas.
Although the bulk of Nas's old school mantra is orchestrated by salaam who has a knack for making the outdated sound contemporary (example: the stripped down "Nazareth savage" where Nas orders the industry to repent with a baptizing flow "I SMELL FEAR LIKE A CANINE THAT SMELLS BURIED BABIES AND YA'LL WEARIN THE AROMA" - A few of Nas's other favorite producers get in the mix. On the LP's 2 part title track, the artist formerly described as nasty skillfully takes listeners back to when kids argued all day about who's the best Emcee? "KRS, KANE, OR RA?" While he ravishes remi's soaring violins on the first part, the piano anchored sequal finds the QB KING Alongside faithfull boardman L.E.S. Saluting KOOL G RAP by impressively re-working the classic "road to the riches" beat While taking minor shots at long time adversaries.
Chucky thompson Allows nas to exhibit his older, wiser side without the pink button up. Last time, all the 2 needed was one mic: on "LIVE NOW" Its simply some sweet piano play. Nas even gets HIS PRODUCTION ON as "GET UP" Continues where God Son's unforgiving "GET DOWN" seized.
WITH NO TRUE "SINGLES", Street disciple is a A & R's NIGHTMARE. At times, the L.P.s production and str8 ahead hooks seems antiquated such as the "uninspiring" "WAR" And plodding SCOTT STORCH-scored "Play on Playa" which lazily samples marvin gaye's overused "AFTER THE DANCE". But guess what? THATS THE HEART OF THE LP. Whether collaberatin with dad on the muddy waters inspired "Bridge the Gap" or expressing his own pragmatic take on his future Marriage with Kelis on "Gettin married" ("Say hello to the man, and goodbye to the jigalo") For ONCE Nas seems comfortable in his own skin. AND THATS THE RISK TAKING ART AT ITS MOST HONEST AND BEST..
Final Rating: "XL"
