First of all, if there was going to be a response to Kendrick, it should have come from Drake. Sure, Cole was called out, too, but he felt more like a footnote, as if someone got in a heated argument with a 6'6" dude and ended up shoving their 5'7" friend. Cole doesn’t even seem like he wants to throw shots at Kendrick, as if the mere concept of negativity is breaking his spirit. He does anyway, sounding worn down over a dollar-store Detroit beat in the first half and a C-tier Conductor Williams instrumental that he must have pulled out of Conway the Machine’s recycle bin in the second. The track is a lot of tip-toeing tough talk and no good jokes, surrounding a couple of bars where Cole lays out his feelings about Kendrick’s catalog: “Your first shit was classic, you last shit was tragic/Your second shit put niggas to sleep, but they gassed it/Your third shit was massive and that was your prime.” What?
Who the fuck wants to hear this extremely measured and level-headed assessment of Kendrick’s albums in a diss track? What is Cole afraid of? Does he think Kendrick is going to send Kamasi Washington and Terrace Martin to his front door? If you’re going to call Kendrick’s music weak, call it weak! Say good kid, m.A.A.d city is fake deep! Say Lance Skiiiwalker was actually the best member of TDE! Make up a conspiracy theory, like you heard he had to perform a satanic ritual to get his Pulitzer! Anything other than this hilarious waffling about whether to call Kendrick trash, which only makes it increasingly clear that not only does Cole love his music, he looks up to him. By the end it feels less like a diss track and more like the sad, conflicted texts you send after a breakup, when you still have a little hope that, one day, eventually, you will be back together like none of this ever happened.

Drake ist ne andere Nummer aber wenn man sich anschaut was Cole auf first person shooter gerappt hat dann seh ich da eher Kendrick als Butthurt, der kriegt ja sogar noch Respekt von Cole mit dieser big 3 Sache und der Rest ist dann auch nix anderes als das was Kendrick damals bei Control gemacht hat, competition. Dass er sich dann von Metro und Future bei deren Kreuzzug gegen Drake nutzen lässt und Cole noch mit abschiesst irgendwie Banane. Und wie schon anderswo schon gesagt wurde halt auch 1:1 das Control Playbook. Finde daher dieses omg Kendrick best verse 2024 auch übertrieben, das ist mid. Ein diss muss klingen wie Adidon und nicht wie Kendrick der gerade wieder neue Töne erlernt hat und nebenbei irgendwas über Canines rappt.

Sehe das wie Ebro, Cole antwortet genau so lightweight wie Kendrick gedisst hat, das ist alles nix Ernstes. Glaub irgendwelche TDE Hansel haben auch schon geschrieben dass das ja alles nur friendly banter sei.

Bin gespannt ob Drake jetzt was dropped und das dann heiß wird, alles andere irgendwie uninteressant. Pitchfork wie immer eher bisschen übers Ziel hinaus.

kann solche Lines von ihm gegen Kendrick genau so wenig ernst nehmen, wie diesen Kendrick-Part auf dem Control-Track, in dem er 'ne Ansage an die halbe Rapszene macht :D vor 10 Jahren oder so waren viele Leute so unglaublich geschockt darüber lach

bin bei J. Cole mittlerweile aber eh komplett raus eigentlich, Born Sinner und vor allem 2014 Forest Hills Drive fand ich sehr gut, aber dann hatte er ja diese... ich nenn sie mal "folding clothes"-Phase mit seinem 4 Your Eyez Only-Album, was auch echt langweilig war... KOD danach hab ich mir noch relativ oft gegeben, aber war letztendlich auch nur okay. kann man sich geben, aber würde jetzt keinem empfehlen, dass er sich das unbedingt geben muss^

und da sind wir bei meiner Frage: hat der seit 2018 nochmal irgendwas gemacht, was man sich reinfahren sollte? komplette Releases, nicht vereinzelte Tracks

Fand die Dreamville Sampler echt gut. Aber da ist er halt so auf ~ 2/3 der Tracks
 
achso und wann kommt eigentlich das mehrfach angekündigte Kollabo-Album von Kendrick und J. Cole
und "Country Cousins" von Big K.R.I.T. und Yelawolf
 
Fand Kendricks „Control“-Verse seit jeher so schockierend und auf Beef-Level spannend wie Prinz Pi‘s komischen Donnerwetter-Deutschrapszene-verklausuliert-als-Märchen-Track, den alle so „oh, der schwarze Ritter, das ist bestimmt Bushido“-mäßig analysiert haben.
