@joeynegro continues to cement his place in the annals of disco‘s rich history with the release of a new version of his hit record ‘Must Be The Music’: a track that has been given a complete overhaul from its original incarnation.

Originally released in 1999 and featuring Taka Boom (sister of Chaka Khan) on vocals, ‘Must Be The Music’ was a hit in every sense of the word. Released by the Subliminal label, it was a one of the rare records to make the transition from club mainstay to genuine pop hit, eventually breaking into the top 10 of the UK singles chart.

Now completely reworked by Joey Negro himself, the record has been totally transformed and given a new lease of life as a shimmering disco anthem in the vein of disco demigods Chic and Change.

“The only thing that remains from the original record is the chorus backing vocals. All the drums, music and verse vocals from Dianne Charlamagne are new. The original sounds a little dated to me now: it’s too fast and has that filtered sound that worked in the 90s and still seems to find favour in some quarters, but for me is tired. Because it was a hit I often get asked to play it when I DJ, so I thought it would be cool to do a radically different remake my own song, produce a new version I could play in my sets alongside original disco and the new music I’m making now.” Joey Negro

This new version of ‘Must Be The Music’ is taken from the forthcoming Joey Negro album Produced With Love. Described by DJ Mag as “his latest masterpiece…this is feel-good, love-inspired classic disco for the 21st Century” and as “sunshine in aural form” by Mixmag, this is only the second ever Joey Negro album to be released – and the first for more than 20 years. The overwhelming majority of music included was newly recorded: a real rarity when it comes to modern disco and indicative of the level of care and attention that has been poured into the project.

Motown Sounds Philly style instrumental "Bad Mouthin" was an underground hit on dance floors in New York, London and Chicago from the late 70's onwards. It was also famously sampled in Bob Sinclar's no 1 "Gym Tonic". The original is a pretty dense, everything in all the way through style production, whereas the JN mix opens things up in a bit with more room for the individual parts to be heard. The end result is an extremely energetic bassline driven disco cut that works super well on the dancefloor.

Tu das! Ich wohne in Aachen, bin in weniger als einer Stunde in Köln, habe dort in den letzten Jahren aber so viele Konzerte und sonstige Veranstaltungen besucht, dass ich – der Abwechslung halber – in letzter Zeit lieber nach Belgien oder in die Niederlande ausweiche, zumal wir an einem Mittwochabend gleich danach wieder nach Hause müssten und ich keinen Alkohol trinken könnte. Ich habe deshalb Karten für das an einem Samstag stattfindende Konzert in Amsterdam bestellt und drei niederländische Freunde und Arbeitskollegen, die bei mir sowieso noch was gut hatten, dazu eingeladen. Ich werde definitiv am 18.02. hinfahren. Ich werde zwar ohne Begleitung dabei sein, weil mein Bekanntenkreis nicht meinen Musikgeschmack teilt. Aber egal. Hauptsache ist, dass das Konzert gut ist und man Spaß hat. Die Tickets für Amsterdam müssten mittlerweile ausverkauft sein, oder?!

Ja, das ist leider ausverkauft und wurde zwischenzeitlich auch vom Bitterzoet ins größere Paradiso Noord verlegt. Allein auf einem Konzert, allein auf einer Messe, allein im Urlaub, allein im Stadion, allein im Kino – kenne ich alles und habe damit auch überhaupt kein Problem, wenn meine Leute mal keine Lust oder Zeit haben. Viel Spaß! :thumbsup:

On their 2015 debut The Universe Smiles Upon You, Khruangbin drew inspiration from ’60s and ’70s Thai soul and psych records, but on their upcoming sophomore LP Con Todo El Mondo, the Texas trio expand their smiling universe to include sounds drawn from Spain and the Middle East. Lead single “Maria También” is a deeply satisfying Eastern-influenced groove, and its accompany video features archival footage of Iranian women who were exiled or silenced following the revolution of 1979.
